Why I’m not settling for good health

You know those niggly ailments that you’ve just got used to coping with or you’ve had for so long you don’t remember what its like to live without?

Despite being in good health, I’ve got a fair few of these. I’m talking about minor health problems that you wouldn’t see from the outside. The ones that don’t affect day-to-day life massively so you can largely ignore them and get on with life.

I appreciate that some illnesses are chronic or incurable, so I want to clarify that I mean the likes of that digestive issue I’ve never looked into, the psoriasis I get when I’m stressed, the ridiculous amount of time it takes skin wounds to heal, the fact I always wake up tired, the fact I have increasingly bad brain fog, and that right now my period comes every three weeks rather than four, when a year ago I was lucky if I had one. None of these things stop me from having a high quality of life, but I think they stop me living my best life.

I’m asking myself why I wait for a health issue to become insufferable before I do anything about it and what I might find out about myself if I found out why my body is behaving the way it is.

Why do so many of us wait to get so ill that we can’t physically work before taking a day off, when we could just take one when we first feel ill?

What if understanding our bodies’ signals could prevent health issues and allow us to lead fuller lives?

For me, making an investment of time and money into myself has been the biggest hurdle. I’d rather see my friends than read up about probiotics that might help my digestive system function better and I’d rather spend money on brunch than pay to see a specialist.

This post is no way detracting from the overwhelming gratitude I feel to have an able body and mind, and to have been healthy almost my whole life. This post is setting an intention to make my health a priority because I’m convinced that if I start listening to my body I can have great health, rather than good health. I can be happier, have more energy and live a fuller life.

Sharing the latest in my journey through this lil blog will help keep me accountable and will hopefully be somewhere to look back and see how far I’ve come.
